Russian exhibit awarded special prize at London Design Biennale

On Sept. 8, the Russian exhibition at the first London Design Biennale was awarded the Utopia Medal for the best response to the biennale theme, Utopia by Design. The Moscow Design Museum curated Russia's entry, "Utopia: Lost Archives of Soviet Design."

At the ceremony, the director of the biennale Christopher Turner noted that it was the most inspiring interpretation of the biennale topic.

The medal for Russia "was awarded because it is contemporary designers looking back at their history and, in a creative way, try to learn from it," Turner told RBTH after the ceremony. "These archives that Moscow Design Museum is showing for the first time outside Russia are fantastic and I like the way it's displayed, like the archives have just been discovered - with big slides on the wall," Turner said.

"The work we are exhibiting today is the result of four years of research by our team, facts that we collected drop by drop," Moscow Design Museum director Alexandra Sankova said in her award speech. "We believe that without knowing your past, you can't move forward and you can't build your future."
