Russian social networks are full of pictures of snowy weather today. In Russia, June 1 is officially the first day of summer in the country. However, due to the fact that almost 20 percent of Russian territory lies north of the Arctic Circle, there are some cities, towns and villages where snow falls even in summer.
However, the news website Megatyumen reports that today it also snowed in the cities of Surgut, Novy Urengoy and Noyabrsk, all of which are located a good distance south of the Arctic Circle (about 300 miles). This is fairly unusual weather for local residents, as the average temperature in June in these cities is 56 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius).
In Central Russia the weather today was warm and the sun was shining. In Moscow the temperature reached 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius).
