The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has published a ranking of the world’s largest defense companies at the end of 2014. In 2014, Russian companies showed growth, rising several places in the list, and the number of Russian companies in the Top 100 increased from nine to 11.

11th place: Almaz-Antey Anti-Aircraft Defense Concern

The holding company rose by one position in 2014, with the total sales of the company amounting to more than $9 billion. Almaz-Antey produces the S-300 and S-400 Triumf close-range and long-range anti-aircraft missile systems. The S-400 covers the sky over Syria; China became the first foreign customer of the air defense system in 2015, while India is negotiating for its purchase.

14th place: United Aircraft Corporation

The UAC moved from 15th place to 14th over the course of 2014. The UAC produces military and civilian aircraft – Su and MiG fighter jets, the Yak-130 combat trainer, the Sukhoi Superjet-100 and the MS-21 passenger aircraft, and the Ilyushin Il-76MD-90 strategic airlifter. Su and UBS Yak-130 fighter jets are in particular demand, as well as Be-200 amphibious aircraft. Total sales amounted to $7.7 billion at the end of 2014.

The ranking also featured subsidiaries of holding companies – the companies Sukhoi, Irkut and MiG (part of the UAC), Sevmash, Admiralty Shipyards, the Zvezdochka Ship Repair Center (part of the USC), Sozvezdie Concern (part of the UIMC) and the Ufa Engine Industrial Association (part of the UEC).

15th place: United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC)

At the end of 2014, the USC rose two places. The USC is a monopolist in the production of nuclear and non-nuclear submarines, surface warships of different classes, as well as civilian ships and oil drilling platforms.

The company has developed a stable network of buyers – Varshavyanka-class submarines are bought by India, while Vietnam, in addition to these submarines, purchases Gepard-class frigates.

23th place: Russian Helicopters

The holding company rose in the ranking by three spots, with total sales amounting to $3.9 billion. Russia’s armed forces receive more than 100 new helicopters such as the Ka-52 and Mi-28N every year, while some of the world’s most-produced helicopters, the Mi-8 and the Mi17, patrol the skies over countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

24th place: United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation

The producer and developer of communications devices and systems, robotic systems and automated command and control systems entered the ranking for the first time. The UIMC's products are supplied to more than 30 countries, including those in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

34th place: Tactical Missiles Corporation

The corporation climbed 12 places in the ranking in 2014. The company is a leading manufacturer of Yakhont anti-ship cruise missiles and precision-guided bombs, which are now widely used by Russian military aircraft against ISIS in Syria.

38th: United Engine Corporation

The UEC fell two places compared to last year. It produces engines for Soyuz launch vehicles, as well as engines for military and civil aircraft as well as ship gas turbine-powered generators. The corporation's total sales amount to $4.2 billion.

39th place: High Precision Systems

High Precision Systems is another newcomer to the ranking, with total sales of $2.3 billion. The company produces high-precision systems and tactical combat zone weapon systems.

The Pantsir-SM1 and Palma land and naval close-range air defense systems, as well as the Kornet-E anti-tank system, are already well known to foreign buyers.

Pantsir systems are in service with the United Arab Emirates army and cover the Russian military base in Latakia, Syria; Palma ship air defense missile/gun systems are installed on Gepard-class frigates for Vietnam; while Kornet systems are used by the Peruvian Army.

45th place: Radio-Electronic Technologies Concern (KRET)

After rising by nine positions, the leading manufacturer of airborne equipment and avionics as well as electronic warfare systems ranked 45th in 2014.

Given the secrecy and technological advancement of the KRET's developments, the holding company has the Russian Defense Ministry as its main client.

However, the KRET is actively implementing civil projects as well, including abroad. The Ulyanovsk Instrument Manufacturing Design Bureau (UKBP), part of the KRET, has supplied equipment for hydroelectric control systems to the Republic of Ecuador.

61st place: Uralvagonzavod

The manufacturer of the Armata heavy platform rose in the ranking by 19 spots. In the coming years, the platform will be used to mass produce tanks, armored infantry fighting vehicles, and self-propelled artillery systems.

Tanks and infantry fighting vehicles produced by Uralvagonzavod are in service with a number of countries – Venezuela, India, Cuba, Iran, Vietnam, Macedonia, among others.

91st place: Radio Technical and Informational Systems Concern (RTI)

The concern produces over-the-horizon radars and heavy-duty long-distance radars such as Voronezh units, which cover the perimeter of Russia, identifying potential missile attacks. In addition to radars, the RTI produces civilian products such as pumps and ventilation equipment.
