Bird’s eye view of ancient Yaroslavl

Yaroslavl is the largest of the eight cities of Russia's Golden Ring

Yaroslavl is the largest of the eight cities of Russia's Golden Ring, a circle of historic towns slightly to the north-east of Moscow which are a popular tourist destination. It is sited on the north-eastern side of this 'ring'.

Yaroslavl was founded by Grand Prince of Kievan Rus Yaroslav the Wise (988-1010) and consisted of a small wooden fortress. In 2010 the city marked its millennial anniversary. The historical centre of the city of Yaroslavl is the oldest part and the core of development of one of the richest and most ancient and well-preserved Russian cities. The architectural ensemble of the centre was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

Whilst the city is best known for its architectural merits, it also has a relatively large repertoire of cultural attractions. During summer Yaroslavl hosts several music, theatrical and science festivals.
