The International Women’s Day, which is marked on March 8, started as a Socialist and feminist political event in the early 20th century. In Russia, however, March 8 had long lost its political tinge by the time when the government declared it a bank holiday in 1966.
For almost half a century now March 8 is the day when all Russian women without exception are showered with flowers and other gifts by the male half of the population. What presents Russian men tend to give on this day? And what kind of gifts do Russian women hope to receive?
