‘Tis the season: The countdown to Christmas begins

On Sunday, November 29, the Advent calendar counting down the month leading to Christmas in the Catholic world began. Now is the time that people usually begin decorating their homes and apartments with holiday symbols such as Christmas trees, wreaths, ornaments and lights.

A giant fir tree was installed and decorated in GUM, Russia’s most famous department store, which is found on Red Square and is synonymous with holiday shopping.

The tree is decorated in a style that was popular in the Soviet Union in the 1960s: covered with bonbons, mandarins, holiday ball ornaments, retro postcards and holiday lights.

A traditional holiday fair will be held at the base of the tree where various seasonal presents, handmade Christmas ornaments and old postcards will be for sale. Lovers of Soviet vintage will undoubtedly be pleased by the selection of retro Christmas decorations.
