Nizhny Novgorod, Russia's secret gem on the Volga

During the Soviet period Nizhny Novgorod was a closed city, but now it offers plenty to do for architecture aficionados, lazy pedestrians and sun worshipers.

Its monumental stone Kremlin, picturesque river esplanades and vibrant pedestrian walkways make Nizhny Novgorod an attractive tourist destination. Interestingly enough until 1991 this gem, which is full of antique churches and charming wooden houses, was completely closed off to foreigners due to the strategic military production facilities located here.

Now Nizhny Novgorod (in Soviet times known as Gorky) is open to all travelers, so we invite you to enjoy the captivating views of Russia's largest city on the Volga River.

But that’s the postcard image. What lies at the heart of the real Nizhny?
