Sonu Nigam to perform in Moscow

The Bollywood and Indian pop icon will make his first trip to the Russian capital for a concert on August 10.

Indian singing sensation Sonu Nigam will perform in the Russian capital on August 10, in a concert at the Crocus City Hall. The concert is being organised by the Overseas Bihar Association (OBA) with the support of the Indian Embassy in Moscow’s Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre.

“In my long singing career of about 36 years, I have travelled almost the whole world, but Moscow has always been an exception in my list,” Nigam said. “This year, I’m going to break that jinx!”

In 2004, he won India’s National Film Award for best playback singer for his role in the Shah Rukh Khan film “Kal Ho Naa Ho.” The 40-year old singer, who has also won 4 Filmfare awards, will be accompanied by his band. “His excellent rapport with the audience and his energetic acts has bowled over the audiences all over the world and the magic continues,” the OBA said in a press release. “Today he is a superstar, an icon to millions of music lovers across the globe.”

The concert will be the culmination of a series of cultural programmes that begin on August 3. The Indian Embassy’s school will conduct drawing, essay and debate competitions for its students. This will be followed by “Temptation 2013,” an Indian Food Competition to be held on August 3 at the Talk of the Town, an Indian Restaurant. Several prizes are up for grabs at the competition including a three-night stay in a five-star hotel in Delhi. The winners will also get a chance to be present at dinner organised in Nigam’s honour. The OBA will also organise a lucky raffle draw with 3 Moscow-Delhi return air tickets. The proceeds of the draw will go to the Relief Fund for victims of the Uttarakhand natural disaster.

Before the concert, a day-long exhibition of Indian clothes, jewellery and handicrafts will be held at the venue.

The Overseas Bihar Association is a non-commercial socio-cultural organization of Indians established in May, 2012 in Moscow to promote Indian Culture through its different activities. Last year it organised a celebration to mark 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Indian state of Bihar. Bollywood singer Alka Yagnik , Bhojpuri singer Devi Verma and the winner of K for Kishore, Chetan Rana performed in a concert in Moscow to mark the occasion.
