July 9 marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Paul Khlebnikov, the former editor of Forbes Russia. Khlebnikov was shot on a Moscow street leaving his office late at night on July 9, 2004.

Khlebnikov’s murder remains unsolved. In May 2006, a jury aquitted Musa Vakhayev, Kazbek Dukuzov and Fail Sadretdinov of carrying out the killing. Russia’s Supreme Court later overturned the acquittal, but Vakhayev and Dukuzov fled the country before they could be retried. Sadretdinov was later convicted on unrelated charges. No one has ever been charged with ordering the killing.

In a statement issued on the eve of the anniversary, Khlebnikov’s widow Musa said: “We are bitterly disappointed. Ten years ago, we called the murder investigation a test for the Russian state, and the results speak today about the failure of the justice system.”
