Iraq intends to strengthen coordination and interaction with Moscow in fighting terrorism, the Russian Foreign Ministry said after a meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, the Russian president’s Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa, and a delegation of the Iraqi parliament’s Defense and Security Committee led by the committee head, Hakim al-Zamili.
"During the talks the sides discussed the situation in Iraq; the resolute efforts taken by the Iraqi authorities to counteract the expansion of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (the former name of the Islamic State terrorist group, which is banned in Russia) as well as Russia’s military operation to suppress terrorists in neighboring Syria," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"The Iraqi side said it was determined to further strengthen coordination and interaction between Moscow and Baghdad in fighting terrorism and stressed the importance of the Russian side’s ongoing support for the Iraqi government," Hakim al-Zamili stressed.
