The nature of Kalmykia (video)

The Russian Republic of Kalmykia is located in the southeastern part of European Russia. The region is more than 75,900 square kilometers, which is bigger than some European countries. About 90 percent of the territory is steppe.

An old Kalmyk proverb says that three eternities meet in the steppe - the eternity of sky, the eternity of a person's soul and the eternity of the steppe itself. In this video, presenter Igor Maksimenko describes the steppe plants, especially absinth. For the Kalmyk people, the absinth plant is the symbol of their land. Even if they leave Kalmykia, they take some absinth with them to be reminded of their homeland.

This program also shows the unforgettable site of a tulip island in blossom and the Yashaltinskoe Salt Lake, which rivals the famous Dead Sea. Viewers will get an in-depth look at the "Chyornie Zemli" bird preserve on Lake Manich-Gudilo. Ornithologists from all over the world come here to observe different bird communities.

The final part of the film features a sea walk on the Caspian Sea.
