Russia-Cuba relations have become more pragmatic - Putin

Russian-Cuban relations have become more practical, President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with head of the Cuban State Council and Cabinet Raul Castro at his country residence in Novo-Ogaryovo.

Putin and Castro embraced as old friends and repeated several times in the presence of the press that they were very glad to meet.

"Cuba is our long-standing partner and we are very glad to see you," the Russian president said at the beginning of their meeting.

Putin recalled that the 110th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and Russia was recently marked. "There have been different periods in our relations during that time. Today they are becoming more pragmatic. Nevertheless, everything that has been accumulated over the years is our legacy," he said.

He said he intended to discuss key issues in bilateral relations with the Cuban official.

Through Raul Castro he conveyed the best of wishes to Fidel Castro. "I want to ask you to convey the best wishes to our great friend Fidel Castro," he said to Fidel's brother.
