Moscow urges U.S. to cooperate more actively both with Syrian opposition, authorities

Russia hopes the United States will work more actively both with the authorities and the opposition in Syria to settle the crisis in this country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

At a meeting with U.S. Ambassador Michael McFaul, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov informed him of "the work being carried out by Russia both with Damascus and various groups of the Syrian opposition. A hope was expressed that the U.S. partners, too, will act in the same fashion," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The two diplomats exchanged their views on the developments in and around Syria, including in light of the discussion at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) of the extension of the mandate of the UN Monitoring Mission in Syria, the ministry said.

"The parties confirmed the shared desire to comply with Annan's plan approved by the UNSC and the provisions of the Final Communique of the ministerial meeting of the Action Group in Geneva," the statement said.

"Bogdanov stressed the need for strict compliance by all parties, including the external actors, with the obligations arising from the aforesaid documents aimed at peaceful resolution of the Syrian crisis," the Foreign Ministry said.
