Defense attorney hopes Supreme Court has made first step towards justice in Khodorkovsky case

Former Yukos head Mikhail Khodorkovsky's defense lawyer hopes the Supreme Court chairman's decision to start an oversight inquiry into Khodorkovsky's and his business partner Platon Lebedev's complaints marks headway towards justice in this case.

"I have just learned that the Supreme Court chairman has made the decision to start an oversight inquiry into our complaints. I can only say one thing: it is either yet another special operation with the use of the court, or the first step towards justice. I hope for the latter," Vadim Klyuvgant told Interfax on Tuesday. Until now, courts only voiced the decisions made by the authorities, he said. "We will see how the situation will be developing, and what the follow-up events and outcome will be like. The decision alone does not suggest anything," the defense lawyer said.

Reports said earlier that Supreme Court Chairman Vyacheslav Lebedev personally started an oversight inquiry into Khodorkovsky's and Lebedev's complaints, after he annulled a Supreme Court judge's earlier ruling. Vyacheslav Lebedev annulled the judge's ruling to reject Khodorkovsky's and Lebedev's complaints and personally started an oversight inquiry, Interfax has learnt.
