An authorized opposition rally in support of detained activists has begun in St. Petersburg, an Interfax correspondent reports. The protest is held in support of the activists detained after unrest erupted in Moscow during the May 6 demonstration in Bolotnaya Square, and to demand the release of the prisoners.
The protestors are gathered on Troitskaya Square near the Solovki Stone memorial commemorating the inmates of the Stalin-era concentration camps.
The action has brought together representatives of various opposition movements, including the Left Front, The Other Russia and Solidarity. Some nationalist movements are also taking part.
Demonstrators are holding posters reading: "Russia without political tyranny!" "Freedom to May 6 prisoners - victim s of political reprisals in present-day Russia!"
There are several dozen of opposition activists and a roughly equal number of reporters. The situation is quiet. Several policemen are patrolling the area.
