Russia closes the Games with gold

Russia shocked Brazil by coming back from two sets down to win gold in the men’s volleyball Sunday. The result gave Russia its first volleyball gold and stopped Brazil men’s from achieving the Olympics’ first volleyball double gold since the Moscow Games of 1980 after the Brazilian women beat the United States in Saturday’s final.

Dmitry Musersky top-scored with 31 points for Russia, while Wallace de Souza was the best of the Brazilians with 27 points. Italy beat Bulgaria by three sets to one to win the bronze medal earlier Sunday.

Russia’s Yegor Mekhontsev won his country’s first boxing gold medal of the Olympics, beating Kazakhstan’s Adilbek Niyazymbetov on a tie-break in the final.

The fight finished 15-15, with Mekhontsev given the win on a judges' decision after countback failed to produce a winner. Mekhontsev said his emotions were confused after winning gold. "I don't know how I will feel. Perhaps I will cry, perhaps I will laugh," he said when asked how it would feel to be presented with the medal.

Brazil’s Yamaguchi Falcao Florentino and Ukraine’s Gvozdyk took bronze after losing their semifinal bouts Friday.

Russia emphatically captured the rhythmic gymnastics gold at the London Olympics on Sunday, finishing well clear of Belarus, who claimed silver. The Russians won with a total score of 57.000 awarded 28.300 for their spectacular final performance with ribbons and hoops.

"We are simply very happy. We are over the moon," Russia team member Uliana Donskova said. "We believed in our victory, but we didn't allow ourselves to relax. We didn't think about the medal. We had big support and there was no pressure on us."

Belarus finished second with a total of 55.500 points after scoring 27.675 on the final rotation, enough to leapfrog Italy and take the silver. Italy were awarded 27.325 in the final for a total of 55.450.

Russia won both gold medals in the rhythmic gymnastics after Beijing gold medalist Evgenia Kanaeva defended her Olympic title in the individual all-around category on Saturday with four exquisite performances.
