Police arrive at pro-Pussy Riot flash mob scene at Christ the Savior Cathedral

A conflict erupted between security guards and participants in a flash mob in support of the Pussy Riot punk singers near the Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow.

More than 20 activists wearing balaclavas of various colors formed a chain on the stairs of the church, holding large letters reading "Blessed are the merciful."

Security guards' attempts to break up the flash mob deteriorated into minor clashes with activists and reporters.

Police have arrived at the scene, according to witnesses' accounts.

The church's sacristan, Archpriest Mikhail Ryazantsev, told Interfax that, "nothing of this kind has occurred inside the church."

"What is happening outside has nothing to do with the church. People hold rallies at the monument to Engels nearby on a daily basis. So what?" he said.
