Leader of the Movement in Defense of the Khimki Forest Yevgeniya Chirikova has decided to run for the Khimki mayoral office.
I was not planning that initially but made the decision at the request of a great number of supporters, Chirikova told Interfax.
"I was asked by a huge number of people, and I could not deny them, so as soon as it is possible to file documents to the election commission, I will do so straight away," the environmentalist said.
I will build my election campaign around social and transport issues, she said.
"The highway construction is planned in a way that it will give rise to a host of transport issues in Khimki, and these, in turn, will lead to social issues. I will be dealing with all this," Chirikova said.
Other leaders of Russian environmental groups too must run for offices in the municipal and executive authorities, she said.
"Let my example inspire leaders of other ecological and public groups, an example which shows that instead of sitting idly, one can try and come to power and change the situation in one's own town," Chirikova said.
