Preparations for APEC Vladivostok summit almost complete

Twenty-one Primorye enterprises will render services to APEC Vladivostok summit participants and guests on the Russky Island. The island's energy infrastructure is ready, the Primorye territorial administration reported on Monday.

There will be a tourist office and a fitness center, too, Primorye territorial licensing and trade department director Yelena Koval said. In her words, the island will have two medical centers.

Energy sites are in full preparedness for the APEC summit, Primorye territorial energy, oil, gas and coal mining department head Nikolai Lovygin said. An energy supply management center operates 24/7.

The first group of volunteers has been trained, territorial youth affairs department head Alexander Kaidanovich reported. Volunteers are assisting summit preparations on the Russky Island. The second team of volunteers arrived on August 26 for taking brief courses. "The guys have everything they need - good uniforms and free mobile phone service. They are provided with transportation and meals and go on sightseeing tours," Kaidanovich said.

The Russian Interior Ministry is also ready for the APEC summit 2012, Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev said in Vladivostok on Monday. "We are making the last check shortly before the summit: we are verifying the readiness of police forces for ensuring the security of the international forum," the minister said. "About 10,000 policemen and Interior Ministry Forces servicemen, eleven cutters, six helicopters and two drones will provide the summit security," he added. The officers protecting the summit will be remunerated, Kolokoltsev said.

The minister visited a new terminal of the Knevichi Airport. "We inspected the operation and security of the international airport terminal. All is ready for greeting the guests. We have seen high-tech equipment, observation and control systems," he said. The airport security meets the highest international standards, the minister said. The terminal is equipped with about 300 video cameras, more than 30 metal detectors and other instruments.

Kolokoltsev also took a ride aboard a Mangust high-speed police cutter. "This cutter has an amazing speed and maneuverability and carries unique equipment. What is particularly important, it has an access to search and reference databases," he said.

The APEC summit will take place on the Russky Island in Vladivostok from September 2 through 9.
