A minute of silence was observed in the courtyard of School No.1 in Beslan on Monday in memory of the victims of the 2004 terror attack, an Interfax correspondent reported.
The bell sounded twice at 1:05 p.m. Moscow time, when the first blast went off at the school eight years ago. After observing the minute of silence the schoolchildren released 334 white balloons, as many as there were hostages in the 2004 drama, into the air.
The memorial events will continue in the City of Angels memorial cemetery, where the 334 victims were buried.
The mourning ceremony was attended by members of the North Ossetian Cabinet and the republic legislature, court and law enforcement people, Vladikavkaz officials and representatives of political parities, public organizations and the clergy.
More than 1,200 schoolchildren of School No.1, their parents and teachers, were taken hostage on September 1, 2004. The hostage drama lasted for three days in a gym, stuffed with explosives. Three hundred and thirty-four people, among them 186 children, were killed.
