Jackson-Vanik Amendment may be repealed in September - Ambassador McFaul

U.S. President Barack Obama's administration has taken serious steps towards canceling the Jackson-Vanik Amendment, U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul told the Vladivostok public on Monday.

He said none of the previous administrations had done so much for repealing that amendment.

The efforts are very serious; this is not an act of charity but an advantageous move, the ambassador said, noting that the historical amendment was harmful for U.S. business.

The amendment may be canceled in September; if not, the work will continue, the ambassador said.

Earlier reports said that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hoped for the cancellation of the amendment and the granting of a normal trade partner status to Russia already in September.
