Church hopes court will respond if Pussy Riot repent

The Moscow Patriarchate is hopeful that the Pussy Riot punk singers will step on the path of spiritual rebirth, and this will impact the court's position.

"Again, acts like the one ventured at the Christ the Savior Cathedral insult religious people's feelings and must be condemned and punished, whichever arguments may be used to justify them. This position is shared by an overwhelming majority of our citizens," the head of the Synodal Information Department, Vladimir Legoida, said in a statement on Sunday ahead of the court hearings of the Pussy Riot case, set for Oct. 1.

At the same time the Church hopes that, "the defilers of a holy place will repent of their sin to the benefit of their souls," Legoida writes.

"Since the purpose of punishment is correction, may the offenders of the law get a chance to step on the path of correction, and may their words of repentance and regret for what they did, if spoken, be heard," the statement says.
