Russian presidential ombudsman on children's rights Pavel Astakhov has asked the Foreign Ministry to help an underage girl who has been raped in Italy.
"I have asked the Russian Foreign Ministry to help underage Angelina Ch., who has been raped in Italy. We are following the investigation and the developments," Astakhov said on Twitter on Monday.
Astakhov is now investigating "the legality of the operations of the foundation that sent Angelina to Italy on an international student exchange program."
According to media reports, a 17-year-old citizen of Russia has been raped in Italy. The girl, who arrived in the city of Aquapendente on an international student exchange program a month ago, says she was raped by five local men. Doctors confirmed the rape.
Astakhov's press service has reported that Angelina arrived in Aquapendente and started attending classes in the Leonardo da Vinci lyceum on Sept. 7 and was raped on Sept. 29.
"Angelina said she and her friend form Norway went to a disco in the neighboring city of Viterbo. On the way back, the girls could not get a taxi and got into a car with five young men, who raped the Russian girl," the press service said.
"Despite threats and demands not to tell anyone anything, Angelina reported the gang rape to the Italian prosecutors. The Russian consulate is now working on her case," the document says.
Astakhov's office also reported that Angelina was moved from her host family in Aquapendente to Rome for safety reasons and to save her mental health because local residents have taken the side of their fellow countrymen and are blaming everything on the girl.
Consular officials are helping the girl. Evidence is being collected.
