Over 40,000 take part in electing opposition Coordinating Council

Over half of the registered voters have taken part in the election of the Coordinating Council of the Opposition, head of the Central Election Committee of the opposition Leonid Volkov told Interfax on Sunday.

"By now 40,800 people have already voted, 30,000 of them today. We are happy with the turnout," he added.

Volkov reminded Interfax that over 157,000 people registered as voters throughout Russia and over 90,000 have passed the verification procedure.

"Voting is both online and at over 70 specially equipped polling stations throughout the country. One of them where voting will continue today as of 3 p.m. is located in Trubnaya Square in the center of Moscow. Four tents have been set up there where registered voters will be able to make their choice," he said.

He reminded Interfax that voting in the Coordination Council election has been extended until 10 p.m. on Monday.

Volkov said that attempts continue to obstruct the operation of the website on which voting is conducted.

"The most powerful DDOS attacks were registered yesterday. Attacks on our website continue today but the security of the website permits for neutralizing them in good time. So far the website has been functioning without a hitch," he said.
