Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has asked former Syrian Prime Minister Riyad Hijab, who switched to the opposition, to voice his opinion on the current situation in Syria.
"It is important to use this opportunity to listen to what you have to say about the ongoing events in your country," Lavrov said.
"We very much would like the bloodshed in Syria to stop as soon as possible, which would require synchronized steps based on the understanding that this bloodshed must be stopped by all sides," the Russian minister said.
Hopefully, this goal will guide the efforts of all external players seeking to unite the Syrian opposition, he said.
"We do not see any solution other than political dialogue between the government and opposition groups," Lavrov said.
Hijab, for his part, said that he had wanted to meet with Lavrov for a long time.
"We have long been willing to meet with you in order to tell you what we think. I wanted it most of all because I once served as Syria's prime minister," he said.
