Russian Foreign Ministry hails Gaza ceasefire

Russia welcomes an Israeli-Palestinian agreement on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and highly appreciates Egypt's efforts in this issue, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

"We welcome the ceasefire in Gaza and highly appreciate and support Egypt's peacekeeping efforts, which largely contributed to the success of the negotiations," he said at a press briefing in Moscow.

Russia calls on the sides to show restraint in order to prevent a return to the confrontation, which is ruinous for the civilian population of Israeli and the Gaza Strip, he said.

There is a need to secure a sustainable and lasting solution to the conflict, Lukashevich said.

"We are certain that it is necessary to build upon this success, trying to secure a sustainable and lasting solution, which would ensure Israel's security and a worthy peaceful life for the population of the Gaza Strip as a part of the Palestinian Territories without any blockade and isolation," he said.

Russia will continue vigorously promoting this vision both in bilateral contacts and multilateral formats, including the Middle East Quartet of international mediators, the diplomat said.
