Alexander Nevsky submarine to launch Bulava missile in July 2013

The Alexander Nevsky, the first serial Project 955 Borei-class nuclear submarine, will launch a Bulava strategic sea-based missile as part of its tests in early July 2013, a Russian defense industry source told Interfax-AVN on Wednesday.

"The Alexander Nevsky will perform its first Bulava launch from an underwater position as part of tests in early July," the source said.

The possibility of a simultaneous launch of Bulava missiles from the Yury Dolgoruky and the Alexander Nevsky is being analyzed, the source said. "If it is possible to eliminate technical problems in the software of the automated system controlling launches of Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles from Borei-class submarines, the launch could be multiple," he said.
