Moscow believes U.S. expects Syrian opposition forces' armed victory - Lavrov

Moscow believes the U.S. expects the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces' armed victory in the Syrian conflict by officially recognizing them as the only legitimate representative of the Syrian people, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"Since the coalition has been recognized as the only legitimate representative, the U.S. has apparently decided to stake solely on an armed victory of this very national coalition," Lavrov said at a press conference following negotiations with Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak on Wednesday.

Russia would like the U.S. to clarify its position on the issue, he said.

"We will naturally ask our U.S. partners to clarify how they see this situation considering this statement," Lavrov said.

At the same time, he said, "It seemed to us at consultations in Geneva three days ago that the Americans realize the need to provide conditions for a common Syrian dialogue, in which the government should take part as well."

"So this is quite an unexpected turn for us, and, as I have already said, we will seek clarity as to what particularly is implied and how they will be acting now," he said.
