Global missile defense to undermine strategic stability - Russian general

The creation of the global missile defense system may provoke an arms race and hinder nuclear disarmament, Russian Strategic Rocket Forces commander Col. Gen. Sergei Karakayev told journalists on Friday.

"According to our estimates, the creation of the global missile defense system may provoke an arms race. If this happens, then there can be no strategic stability. There will also be no further steps in the nuclear disbarment sphere," Karakayev said.

"We say that there is a correlation between offensive and defensive strategic systems. That is why in case missile defense potential is growing, a question arises whether it is feasible to reduce offensive arms," he said.

"So far there is a stable mechanism of nuclear deterrence in the world, one should not break it without creating another proportionate mechanism of ensuring international stability," he said.
