The UN Security Council should react to the North Korean rocket launch, but the form of this reaction will be discussed, Russian Foreign Ministry official Alexander Lukashevich said.
"It's an absolutely legitimate step to raise the issue of further actions in regard to this launch in the UN Security Council," he told a briefing in Moscow on Friday, responding to a question from Interfax as to whether Russia will back the imposition of sanctions on North Korea.
"As for the form of the Security Council's reaction, we are absolutely open to a constructive discussion of the various modalities of this reaction. As you know, they can take very different forms," the diplomat said.
"This reaction should help increase the authority of the entire UN and its main body, the UN Security Council," Lukashevich said.
Lukashevich recalled that the Russian Foreign Ministry has recently issued a statement in which North Korea's actions were condemned and called a direct violation of Resolution 1874 of the UN Security Council.
