Rumors of chemical arms' use in Syria aim to justify foreign intervention - expert

Reports of chemical weapons used in Syria may become a pretext for a foreign military intervention, Foreign and Defense Policy Council Chairman Fyodor Lukyanov told Interfax on Tuesday.

"It looks like war propaganda. The Barack Obama Administration stated a short time ago that the use of chemical weapons on the people would be a reason for invasion of Syria. No other reasons were given. So, it is very important for Al-Assad's opponents that these weapons are used," Lukyanov said.

Reports of the use of chemical weapons in Syria may target undermining of the regime and "setting of external forces into motion," he noted.

"There have been no independent confirmations (to the use of chemical weapons) as yet, so I believe the reports belong to this category and weapons have not been actually used," the expert said.
