Construction of new radars will start in Yeniseisk and Barnaul in 2013 - Defense Ministry

Russia will continue developing its missile early warning system and building new radars next year, Deputy Defense Minister Col. Gen. Oleg Ostapenko told journalists on Thursday.

"New radars will be built along the entire perimeter of Russian territory, including Yeniseisk [Krasnoyarsk Territory] and Barnaul [Altai Territory]," he said.

"The radar in Armavir will be put into operation soon. The station is ready to fulfill its functions. State-commissioned trials are in their final stages. You will be informed shortly that it is about to enter operational service," the general said.

As far as new radars are concerned, "extensive preparations have been made and everything is going according to schedule," he said.

Plans for the development of the Aerospace Defense Forces give priority to building new-generation highly compatible radars on Russian territory. The Voronezh-DM ultra high frequency radar, located in the Kaliningrad region, was put into operation in Nov. 2011. Similar new radars are expected to appear in other Russian regions as part of the program to develop Russia's incoming missile early warning system during the period up to 2018. This measure will help maintain undisrupted radar control across Russia.

The Armavir radar's two sections, which have already been put into operation, have an angular field of vision of 240 degrees, which enables them to monitor the space stretching from France to Spain in the west, to Algeria in the southwest, to Sudan in the south, as well as Iran, Afghanistan, parts of India and Pakistan in the southeast, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Voronezh DM-type radars have a coverage of up to 6,000 kilometers and are "able to detect, track down and classify modern and advanced aerospace attack means, including ballistic and aerodynamic," it said.
