Moscow is prepared to hold a meeting with the leadership of Syria's opposition coalition, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"We have already contacted the coalition's leadership through our embassy in Cairo. We announced our readiness to meet with the chairman, Mr. Khatib. We are still ready to do so," Lavrov said at a press conference after a meeting with his Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Kamel Amr.
"As far as we understood, they are not rejecting this offer of a meeting either," he said.
"As for the essence of the coalition's stance, we were certainly frustrated over its political statement, which was adopted when the coalition was established in Doha. As their main goal they named deposing the regime and dismantling all institutions, and stressed their rejection of any dialogue," Lavrov said.
This situation was discussed with Western partners, including the United States, as well as during the meeting today, he said.
"In my opinion, a realistic assessment of the situation inside Syria should encourage sensible opposition members to look for ways to start political dialogue," he said.
