Russia’s largest oil company, state-owned Rosneft, announced that it will push for an end to Gazprom’s monopoly on exporting natural gas, announced CEO and Putin ally Igor Sechin. Previously only privately-owned gas producer Novatek had been pushing for an end to the monopoly’s dominance of the export market. Experts feel the move may be connected to Rosneft’s development to Arctic shelves that will offer lucrative export opportunities for natural gas and to a broader push by the government to improve efficiency by reducing the state’s role in the economy.
