Exhibition of paintings by Viktor Popkov, celebrated Soviet artist

The Filatov Family Art Fund will host the first exhibition in the UK of paintings by Viktor Popkov next summer at London’s Somerset House. Showcasing the artistic breadth of one of the most celebrated Soviet-era artists, the exhibition will feature up to 40 Popkov paintings including By the White Sea; 1965; Spring at the Depot, 1958; and Summer, July, 1969, which have never been on public display in the UK before The exhibition will be organised by the State Museum and Exhibition Centre Rosizo in Moscow, and is included in the official programme of the Year of Russian Culture in the UK.

The significant artworks will travel from the foremost galleries of Russian art, including the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and regional museums, to be displayed in Somerset House’s West Wing, overlooking the Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court, from 20 May until 24 June 2014.

Mr. Popkov (1932 – 1974) won the Grand Prix at the World Biennale in Paris in 1967. His talent was recognised during his lifetime. Viktor Popkov’s works are owned by leading Russian museums. In recent years, Popkov’s works were successfully displayed at the largest exhibitions of Russian art, including “Russia!” at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2004, New York) and “Socialist Realism” (Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome, 2011).
