The complete English translation of the Yakut heroic epos Olonkho "Nyurgun Bootur the Swift" has been presented in London, the Yakutian government's press service said on Tuesday.
"The first-ever presentation of the complete English translation of the Olonkho epic "Nyurgun Bootur the Swift" has taken place at the London office of Rossotrudnichestvo [Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation]," the report said.
The press service remarked that the translation took a decade to complete.
The Olonkho Research Institute of the Northeastern Federal University translated the epos. Institute employees and post-graduate students, students of the translation department of the Northeastern Federal University's Institute of Foreign Philology and Regional Studies and acclaimed translators contributed to the project.
UNESCO declared Olonkho "a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity" in November 2005.
The Yakut heroic epos Olonkho is on the federal list of 100 books recommended for extracurricular reading.
Olonkho is an ancient epic tale of the Yakuts. Olonkho poems consist of 10,000 to 15,000 lines and are performed by story-tellers.
