Folk box: Nivkhi, one of the smallest minorities in the world

Each week Olga Shapovalova offers to folk music lovers a multicoloured display of customs and traditions, legends and tales, melodies and rythms of Russia.

Nivkhi is one of the smallest minorities living in the world. There are slightly over 5 thousand of them - peaceful, tranquil and unhurried sort of folk... as if talking to this world of ours in a muted voice, listening gravely to the murmur of the grasses and the whisper of the waters... And the grasses and waters do surround them since the majority of Nivkhi live on the island of Sakhalin in Russian Far East where we invite you on a fascinating trip.
