Yuri Bashmet forms youth orchestra for Sochi 2014 Olympics

Yuri Bashmet unveiled his new project: the First All-Russian Youth Symphony Orchestra.

The group consists of 80 musicians from 28 regions of Russia (including 16 from Yekaterinburg). To join the orchestra, the performers undergoing a selection process based on the results of a competition, unique in both its concept and scale, as part of the Sochi 2014 Culture Olympic Games. More than 300 graduates of music and performing arts schools participated in the competition, along with students from music colleges aged 9 to 21.

The selection period lasted seven months. Sometimes, auditions took place with the help of teleconferencing. This is how participants from Sochi, Krasnodar, and Stavropol performed in their hometowns while the jury members listened to them in Moscow. The selection process also took place in Yaroslavl, Perm, Penza, Khabarovsk, Yekaterinburg, and Samara.
