Cherry trees are in blossom even in chilly Moscow

This year's first sakura blossomed in Moscow on April 26 in Birulievo Arboretum; people came here to get a glimpse of the flowers and to celebrate the beginning of spring

Through April 26-27, at peak bloom, people come here to get a glimpse of the flowers. In Russia's central climatic zone, the bloom lasts approximately 5 days in spring. The earliest bloom of sakura in Moscow on record is April 25, and the latest is May 15.

The traditional Japanese festival Hanami was held in the cherry blossom grove to celebrate the beginning of spring and to admire sakura flowers. Pink is the symbol of the awakening of nature. The celebration featured master classes in the art of tea ceremony, Japanese painting, and calligraphy. A sakura grove appeared here in October 2010 with a rock garden.
