How to build a chapel in a day without a single nail

A wooden chapel was built without a single nail in one day in Kolomenskoye park during the Russian Field Slavic Culture Festival.

On July 5, Kolomenskoye Park was the scene of the Russian Field (Russkoye Polye) Slavic Culture Festival, dedicated to the 700th anniversary of the birthday of the Venerable Sergius of Radonezh. The festival’s main aim was to acquaint visitors with ancient Russian culture and show them how Russians’ ancestors lived, as well as building a chapel in one day (without using a single nail!). The chapel will be sent to another city or village to be used.

Ivan Rybin, a volunteer from the Obshchee Delo (Common Cause) project, talked about the construction process and the importance of recreating the wooden chapels popular in the country’s north. All of the festival’s visitors were able to participate in the traditional erection of a chapel. This chapel is a copy of a chapel that previously existed in Solovki and was built by order of Peter the Great. It will be given to an Orthodox parish from the district of Solntsevo where it will be used as a place of worship.
