Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin has criticized the idea of Russia buying Mistral-class helicopter carriers from France.
"It is very strange that, considering our latitudes, we are buying landing ships that do not work when temperature drops to minus 7," Rogozin said at an assembly of the Academy of Military Sciences in Moscow on Saturday.
Talking about the project of a new-generation strategic bomber known as the PAK DA (Prospective Airborne Complex for Long-Range Aviation), Rogozin said defense industry organizations are starting to plan it now.
"We are now starting to plan the PAK DA. It will be based on different engineering and technological solutions, which would enable us to revive our long-range aviation's rating," he said.
Rogozin said also that Russia will create a uniform database on all research and development (R&D) projects.
"A uniform database on all R&D projects is being set up now, and we will introduce government standards related to the best R&D projects in 2013," he said.
This would help optimize all R&D achievements and results related to the building of new weapons and military hardware, he said.
Rogozin also highlighted the role that military scientists and researchers play.
"Without military science, the Defense Ministry will be unable to ensure the procurement of state-of-the-art weapons and military hardware," he said.
