Russia and China believe the recent nuclear test conducted by North Korea should not be used as a pretext for starting an arms race in the region and outside military interference, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"It's very important that the current situation not be used for an arms race in this region and as a pretext for outside military interference and closing all chances for a resumption of the six-party talks," Lavrov told a press conference following negotiations with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi.
Lavrov said Russia and China find the nuclear test conducted by North Korea is unacceptable and deserves condemnation and an appropriate reaction from the UN Security Council.
Yang Jiechi, in turn, said that, even though China condemns the nuclear test and the UN Security Council should react appropriately to it, this response should be aimed at ensuring peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
"China and Russia still believe that six-party talks are an effective mechanism to discuss resolving the Korean nuclear issue, ensuring peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and maintaining long-term stability and calm in Northeastern Asia in general," the Chinese foreign minister said.
