Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed the federal law On the Protection of Citizens' Health from the Impact of Tobacco Smoke and the Consequences of Tobacco Consumption, the Kremlin reported on its website on Monday.

The law was passed by the State Duma on February 12 and approved by the Federation Council on February 20. Specifically, the document prohibits smoking on specific territories, in buildings and objects, envisions pricing, tax, and organizational measures to reduce the demand for tobacco products and restrict trade in them, and prohibits the advertising and sponsorship of tobacco.
"The purpose of the federal law is to realize in the Russian legislation the provisions of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which the Russian Federation ratified in 2008," the state-legal department said in a report.
