Consequences of asteroid destruction with nuclear explosion unpredictable - expert

Scientists are looking into several asteroid defense options, among them asteroid destruction with nuclear devices, Active Academic Advisor of the Russian Academy of Engineering Sciences Yuri Zaitsev told Interfax-AVN.

"Asteroid blasting may have unpredictable consequences. Possibly, an explosion will break an asteroid into pieces. The question is how large the pieces may be and whether they may endanger the Earth," Zaitsev wondered.

Three to four years are necessary for preparing "an attack" on the dangerously approaching asteroid, he said. "If we have 20 to 30 years to prepare, the number of options will be much bigger than in the three to four year period," the expert said.

He noted that humanity "could do nothing so far but fantasize about asteroid defense and try to be more or less realistic."
