The foreign sponsors of the irreconcilable opposition are trying to obstruct the beginning of a political dialogue in Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"The situation in Syria is not becoming better, even though there is growing understanding by all sides of the need to stop violence as soon as possible and start dialogue," he said before the beginning of a Monday meeting with a leading member of the Syrian National Coordinating Council Heisam Manaa in Moscow.
"But there are also many of those who are trying to obstruct that, including the foreign sponsors of the so-called irreconcilable opposition," Lavrov added.
"We're convinced that the efforts you've started, to unite the patriotic opposition on the platform of readiness for the dialog with the authorities, are a very important contribution to this process that we want to launch. The recent Paris conference of patriotic opposition forces you've initiated formed constructive approaches aimed at beginning talks. The Syrian government has also published its ideas, having shown they were ready for the dialog," Lavrov said.
"Russia would like to assist in uniting the two processes," he said.
At the same time, Lavrov said that it was important that Syrians themselves resolved all the issues without outside interference. Syrians have to be the ones to determine the destiny of their country and the destiny of certain politicians, he said.
