The difficult situation in the world is making Russia and China give more attention to bilateral interaction, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Chang Wanquan on Sunday.
"The situation in the world is changing considerably. There is a steady tendency towards active use of force in international issues," Shoigu said. "More and more countries are involved in regional conflicts. The situation in Northern Africa is a fine example of that. In this regard, the importance of close interaction between Russia and China is becoming increasingly important."
Shoigu congratulated his Chinese counterpart on his appointment to the post of defense minister of China.
"I believe our meeting will help strengthen the relations between the defense ministers of Russia and China," Shoigu said. "The visit to the Russian Defense Ministery by Chinese Xi Jinping became a symbolic event."
"It confirms to us once again that military and military-technical cooperation between our two countries is a priority area of interaction between Russia and China," Shoigu said.
The Russian minister recalled that his first official visit after being appointed Russia's defense minister was to China.
The Chinese minister, in turn, said this is his third meeting with the Russian minister.
"I can say we are old friends now," he said.
