44,000 parents deprived of rights last year, Russia needs to solve problem alone - Medvedev

Some 44,000 parents in Russia were deprived of parental rights last year. It is a national mission to improve the orphan situation, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said while presenting a government report to the State Duma.

"A total of 44,000 parents were deprived of parental rights for various reasons last year. It is not just a primary objective but also a national mission to improve the situation," he emphasized.

"A country with a great history and rich culture, centuries-old traditions of compassion and charity needs to do that alone," Medvedev said.
