Strasbourg Court may consider problems of Russian NGOs - Council of Europe

Problems of Russian non-governmental organizations (NGO) may be considered by the European Court of Human Rights, Council of Europe (CoE) Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland said.

Speaking at a press conference in Moscow on Wednesday, Jagland said NGOs' cases may well reach the Strasbourg Court.

He also said that the Council of Europe will closely follow the way the Russian law on NGOs acting as foreign agents is enforced.

Jagland believes the Russian law on NGOs is not likely to be changed, but warned that the Council of Europe will closely monitor its enforcement.

Jagland told that it is very important how the concept of political activities is defined and interpreted.

During his visit to Russia, Jagland met with the Russian president, the Russian foreign minister, and the Russian justice minister in the State Duma. He also met with representatives of NGOs in Moscow.
