Over 130 children and teenagers died and around 4,500 were injured in traffic accidents in January-April 2013, Russian children's rights commissioner Pavel Astakhov said.

Over 130 children and teenagers died and around 4,500 were injured in traffic accidents in January-April 2013, Russian children's rights commissioner Pavel Astakhov said.

"The situation with the injury rate in traffic accidents remains disturbing… A total of 4,263 traffic accidents involving children under 16 were registered just in January-April 2013, in which 138 children died and over 4,500 were injured," Astakhov said on Tuesday at the all-Russian meeting on children's security on roads.

According to Astakhov, the statistics deteriorated in 2012: The number of traffic accidents involving children under 16 was 20,800 in 2012, which is 3.1 percent up year on year.

"A total of 940 children died on roads [in 2012] and over 22,000 were injured," he said.
