Russian Navy should have permanent presence in Mediterranean - Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has set the task of creating conditions for permanent presence of the Russian fleet in the Mediterranean.

"It's a strategic region. We have our interests associated with national security there. For this reason, we are talking about the creation of conditions for permanent presence of Russian ships in the Mediterranean in our days," Putin, who visited the central command point of the Russian Armed Forces on Thursday, said.

Putin suggested that the meeting participants discuss the prospects of forming an operative junction of the Russian Navy in the region and asked the Defense Ministry to give its ideas on the matter.

Earlier on Thursday, the Russian Defense Ministry's press service and information department reported that the permanent operative junction of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean will comprise some ten ships of various classes from Russia's Northern, Black Sea, and Baltic Sea Fleets.
